DRM
Digital Radio operating in AM bands with FM comparable stereo sound
DRM is world-wide the only open standard for the digital usage of the frequency spectrum below 30MHz. DRM can take advantage of the huge coverage properties of long, medium and short wave frequencies without being impacted by their typical distortions and interferences.
Compatible with existing frequency bands, resulting up to 48kbit/s
DRM is compatible with the existing AM bands, which means it typically utilizes only 9kHz bandwidth in the LF and MF bands and 10kHz bandwidth in SW bands. This results in up to 24kbps capacity - thanks to AAC+, the latest audio compression technology, enough for one FM-like parametric stereo channel, or up to 4 voice services at the same time!
If two neighboring frequencies are available, even 20kHz bandwith can be used, resulting in up to 48kbps, which will deliver almost CD quality!
Efficient frequency planning possible because of SFN
The "Digital Dividend" applies also for DRM: Single frequency networks can supply precise regional or even national coverages on inly one frequency, which vacates lots of spectrum if a proper migration process takes place. Rural areas could be illuminated with lots of content without the need of hundreds of small transmitters.
Digital Migration without limits
Thanks to DRM30 and DRM+, the digital migration can be adjusted to any broadcasting environment. Large networks, regional broadcasters or local radio stations can be easily integrated in to a phased migration process. Any available spectrum, even if in odd bands, can be utilized to an optimal supply of broadcasting services.
